NSW SC State Championships 2008 – Meet Report

North Sydney was represented at the state short course championships in Woy Woy by 21 swimmers this past weekend. Collectively, the team placed 4th overall with a respectable 873 points no doubt helped by our 12 relays and several spectacular individual swims.

A few members of the team under the banner between swims.Louise Stevenson and Alan Godfrey won their age groups while Melissa Beames and John DeVries came second and John Wynberg and Christina Echols came 3rd in their age groups. Louise Stevenson was our team star of the meet breaking 3 state records and 1 national record in four different 200m swims. The men’s 200+ medley relay also broke a state record consisting of John DeVries, Alan Godfrey, Hiroto Homma and John Wynberg.

Many swimmers chose to come for just one day of the meet and still managed to swim their maximum 5 events. A big kudos to Robyn Burton for swimming the first 5 events all in a row and then swimming 2 relays at the end of it all. There were several top 3 swims by all the swimmers with almost everyone going home with at least one medal. Full results will be up on our team website soon along with all the club records that got broken.

On the non-swimming side of things, the club staked out some good seats at the pool under the brand new North Sydney banner which got good publicity just for being located above the raffle ticket table. For those that stayed at the Ettalong Tourist Resort on Saturday night, an all you can eat carvery buffet was enjoyed by all along with the recovery properties of pineapple at the War Memorial Club followed by an early to bed. (Thanks to Alvin for coming up to watch the relays and join us for dinner before driving his new car back to Sydney). Thanks to all the swimmers for doing their part and attending to time-keeping duties throughout the weekend. Our volunteer efforts were duly noted by the powers that be! For those that haven’t yet participated in a meet but might be interested, try one out – they’re not nearly as scary as they sound and you can sign up any time on the team website.

Finally a special thank you to Kevin for coaching and split-taking on Saturday and to Hiroto and Keiko for videotaping the entire meet!
