NSW State Champs - Summary

20 swimmers took to the pool at Homebush Bay this past weekend hoping that some of the speed from World Trials and the Skins meet would wear off on the Masters. While we broke no world records, Louise Stevenson managed to finish the meet with a new state record in the 200 Br. The meet got off to a start with a bang when Gillian O'Mara broke the state record by 1/100th of a second in the 50 free as the lead leg on a relay. All of her wedding dress weight loss is paying dividends in the pool. Both girls teamed up with Isla Hale and Melanie Speet to set a new state record in the 4x50 free 80-99yr relay on Sunday.

We had a few new faces in the pool in Chris Armour and Pip Harry. And back to race was Steve Thomas - looking to be fully recovered from back surgery. Luke Ranson is finding his stride at his 3rd meet since joining and we were happy to see Simon Ho's face at a long course meet where he too set a new state record in the 50 backstroke in a sizzling 29.55. Of course the regular speedsters were there in Alan Godfrey, John Wynberg, Dave Lovelace, John Kain and Hiroto Homma as well as some of our most improved racers in the pool over the past few years in Helen White, Regina Haertsch, Peter Murray and John Devries. Special honour of the meet went to Melissa Beams who won her 2nd monogrammed pink towel in a row for highest total branch score for the season in her age group. Sadly missed this weekend was Keiko on the video camera - we hope to see her back behind the camera soon!

In total, 11 relays were swum (with only 1 DQ) and North Sydney came 5th place overall with 732 points - not too far off of 4th place! Louise Stevenson & Christina Echols each did clean sweeps  with 5 gold medals and individual overall winners in their respective age groups.Overall, a well-swum meet by all.
