NSW LC Championships 2008: Carnival Report

It was a very successful meet for all 15 swimmers who attended the NSW LC Championships on April 5-6 at the SOPAC pool. It was also a great warm-up for those attending worlds. In total, the team broke 2 National records (men’s relays) and 5 individual state records as well as 27 club records! In addition to great swims, the team also looked very flash with their new caps and shirts sporting the new & modern North Sydney logo. Talk to John Wynberg if you are interested in purchasing some new spiffy swimming apparel. Full results for the meet are now available on the AUSSI Masters website and North Sydney results are available in the title link. A big thank-you to those who attended for fulfilling your time-keeping duties!

On the female side of things, we had a clean sweep of the female 50 freestyle winning 20-24 (Melanie Speet), 25-29 (Anna Hoy) and 30-34 (Isla Hale) age groups. Respectable swims were also had by Melissa Beames (3rd place) and Gillian O’Mara (2nd place). Many other great swims were had by all the girls (SIX of them!) on the weekend with the highlights coming from our newest member – Isla Hale – in breaking 2 state records and coming very close on 2 others. She intends to break them at World’s, so watch this space! Both Melanie Speet and Isla won their respective age groups overall for the meet. The women’s relays were also standouts – the freestyle relay was within 3/10’s of breaking the state record and won a gold medal. The medley relay came second by only 4/10th’s of a second even though it did break the national record. Look for an improvement on both of these swims at World’s to obtain the records and hopefully come home with some metal.

Hiroto will provide a full review of the men shortly, but the women did take notice of some pretty exceptional swims including 2 national records from the men’s relay team warming up for world’s, and several state records and an age group win from Alan Godfrey. Matt Byrne was a gentleman on Sunday and after a phone call to remind him of his relay commitment, he came out to the pool just to complete the men’s relay and then stepped in for the ill Hiroto in another relay. John “Sandbag” Kain once again proved his name with a blistering 50 free.

The mixed relays were also warming up for world’s &/or having some fun. The oldies (160+ yrs old) won two silver medals with very competitive times against the national record holding Seaside Pirates team. Meanwhile the younger teams were more successful winning a gold medal in their category. It doesn’t get any less competitive being old!

Winning points swimmers from the 2007 season were also announced and in the 20-24 age group, our own Melissa Beames cleaned up last year and was the proud recipient of a pink towel with her name embroidered on it. Additionally 2007 ocean swim results were announced and North Sydney was recognized as the winning club as well as Colin Hannah (our ocean swim captain) as the 30-34 age group winner. There may have been a few other announcements, but due to the P.A. system, we probably didn’t hear them as it tended to sound like garble most of the time – we’re pretty sure this is what we did hear!

Well the warm-up is over – time to rest-up and get ready to perform at Worlds!
