David McMahon says:
I caught the first ferry of the day from Wagstaff on the Central Coast to the Pittwater side of Palm Beach to get there, and it didn't arrive until just after the race started. I still had to jog across from the wharf on Pittwater to the beach for the start, and then register (they were packing up when I arrived), and then place my belongings on the "mobile locker" van, and then get to the start.
As a result, I started about 4 minutes behind my wave. The other yellow caps were through the break and heading around the rocks when I hit the water.
On the way out through the break, my hastily-attached leg strap with race number and microchip started to come off, and I had to stop and re-attach it properly. On going through the next wave my goggles came off completely and disappeared in the foam. I scrambled around hoping they'd surface, when my hand brushed against them in the water, and I managed to re-fit them tightly. Apart from the delayed start, it was a straightforward and enjoyable swim, being gently caressed by masses of (non-stinging) jellyfish for much of the way.
